IELTS Writing Marking Criteria
IELTS Writing Task 1 and
Task 2 scores are calculated by using 4 criteria:
- Task Response
- Coherence and Cohesion
- Lexical Resource
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Task Response (TR):
It means how well you
answer the question. To increase score for task response/achievement (TR/TA),
you should follow these tips:
- Answer all parts of the task
- Write information accurately
- Give a clear overview
- Highlight key features and provide detail with data (Task-1)
- Provide a clear position (Task-2)
Coherence and
Cohesion (CC):
It means how well is your
text structured. To increase score for Coherence and Cohesion (CC), you
should follow these tips:
- Manage paragraphing
- Each paragraph should have a central idea
- Use linking words/connectors
Lexical
Resource (LR):
It means how well is your
vocabulary. To increase score for Lexical Resource (LR), you should follow
these tips:
- Use a wide range of vocabulary
- Use less common words
- Avoid spelling mistakes
Grammatical
Range and Accuracy (GRA):
It means how good is your
grammar. To increase score for Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA), you
should follow these tips:
- Use a wide range of grammatical structures and tenses
- Avoid errors in sentences
- Manage punctuation
IELTS Writing
score calculation:
Each of these four criteria
receives a score from 0 to 9 points. After that, an arithmetic mean is
calculated to determine the task's total score.
For example, if Task 1 gets
following marks:
Task Response- 6.0
Coherence and Cohesion- 6.5
Lexical Resource- 6.5
Grammatical Range and
Accuracy- 7.0
Then score for IELTS Task 1 is 6.5
(6.0+6.5+6.5+7.0/4)
And with the same criteria, task 2 gets 8.0.
IELTS writing
total score:
Note that Writing task
2 weights two times more than Writing task 1.
So, if you get 7.5 for task
2 and 6.5 for task 1, the total score for IELTS Writing module is 8.0*(2/3) + 6.5*(1/3)
= 7.5
IELTS Speaking marking criteria
IELTS Speaking scores are calculated by using 4 criteria:
- Fluency and coherence
- Lexical Resource
- Pronunciation
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Fluency and
coherence (FC):
It means how
clear and structured is your speech. To
increase score for Fluency and coherence, you should follow these tips:
- Speak smoothly and continuously
- Connect your sentences by linking words
- Extend your answers by adding all the relevant details
- Use pausing correctly (don’t take negative pauses)
Lexical
Resource (LR):
It means how
good is your vocabulary. To increase
score for Lexical Resource, you should follow these tips:
- Use a wide range of vocabulary
- Use appropriate words
- Speak formally
Pronunciation (P):
It means how
naturally you sound. To increase
score for Pronunciation,
you should follow these tips:
- Pronounce words clearly
- Stress words and sentences correctly
- Try to be easily understood by the examiner
Grammatical
Range and Accuracy (GRA):
It means how
good is your grammar. To increase
score for Grammatical Range and Accuracy,
you should follow these tips:
- Avoid grammatical mistakes
- Use advanced grammatical structures
IELTS Speaking
score calculation
Each of these criteria receives a score from 0 to 9
points. After that, an arithmetic mean is calculated to determine the total
score.
For example, if your marks are:
FC – 8.0
P – 7.0
LR – 6.0
GRA – 7.0
Then your total score for IELTS
Speaking is 7.0 (8.0+7.0+6.0+7.0/4).
